lace inspired pumpkins

Fall is here and for the last few years I have a tradition of coming up with a variety of unique pumpkin tutorials for my readers! I like to use pumpkins in my fall decorating and since I am not a big fan of traditional carved pumpkins, I challenge myself to get as creative as possible with all kinds of supplies.

Here we go...another pumpkin tutorial for those of you looking for unique and creative ways to decorated those fall pumpkins! I created today's tutorial with the hope to inspire you to see just how creative you can get with a few simple supplies!

I was inspired to use drawings and doodles in white to create the look and feel of white lace.

I started by painting my pumpkins in black- I knew a dark background would make all those white lines really POP!

Once the paint was dry I used a white paint pen to draw lace inspired designs all over the surface.

I am so happy with the result and have already put these pumpkins to use as a centerpiece on the table!

Here is run down of all the pumpkins tutorials over the years. Its been a blast getting creative with such a simple materials and I can't wait for more fun with pumpkins next year!

layers of love online class

My next class Layers of Love goes live this Friday, September 27th!

The concept and understanding of layers is at the foundation of just about everything that I create. From painting, to drawing, to sewing and even crafting- I LOVE LAYERS!!!! There is nothing more beautiful than color on top of pattern, on top of texture, on top of images! There is something about layers (that are done well) that has the abilty to capture the essence of the creative process and invites the viewer to look deeper into the surface.

In this class I will share all that I know about building layers. I will demonstrate how to use color theory, understand contrast, design and how to use all kinds of supplies (paint, pens, paper, stamps, stencils and more) to build beautiful and dymanic layers that can stand alone or be used as a background for a composition.

Class goes live September 27, 2013
Class cost- $30

painted owl pumpkins

Fall is here and for the last few years I have a tradition of coming up with a variety of unique pumpkin tutorials for my readers! I like to use pumpkins in my fall decorating and since I am not a big fan of traditional carved pumpkins, I challenge myself to get as creative as possible with all kinds of supplies.

This year I am kicking things off with some really cute and creative painted owl pumpkins.

I started by drawing a simple outline of an owl.
I used a light colored, non permanent marker that I could paint over.
Using acrylic paint I filled my outline with paint.
The last step was to use a variety of permanent paint pens and markers to add all kinds of details.

For more pumpkin ideas here is a run down of all the pumpkins tutorials over the years. Its been so much fun creating with such simple materials and I can't wait for to share more ideas!

you, me & the sea retreat

This weekend I hosted my You, Me & the Sea Retreat in my studio and once again I was left feeling inspired and honored to have the opportunity to teach and connect with another group of amazing women. We sketched, we painted, we hunted for treasures, we dodged an incoming storm and had a wonderful weekend! Once again I am humbled and feeling grateful for this crazy, creative life and thankful for those of you out there who support what I do!

exploring we will go

A while back we made the promise to each other to always make time to seek adventure as a family
(you can read about it here). Exploration and going outside is a big part of our daily lives and
once in a while I like to share a little peek into our adventures.
